Constellations and Deepsky Atlas

This is a wonderful example of study materials that are new and
available to all because of the Internet. The Hawaiian
Astronomical Society has tapped its resources and the talents of
its members for this project:
"You are seeing the product of a long term effort to provide a
good online atlas of the heavens, combined with photographs of
significant objects, and their descriptions."
Among many rich sections on the site, the Constellations by
Alphabet is an interactive table to access the sky figures by name:
T for Taurus, Triangulum, Telescopium, Triangulum Australe, and
Tucane. For each constellation the Society has provided an
object description, myths are recounted, there are maps, and
JPEG images can be viewed and downloaded. Pondering the
constellations has been a human hobby for thousands of
years. Here city-bound generations can reflect in new ways
online on what ancient nomads thought about as they lay on the
grass on starry nights.

Radar Topography Mission

NASA provides Web sites for each of its shuttle launches,
allowing students to go along for the ride and learn from the
mission along with its astronauts. The objective of the Endeavour
trip featured here is to obtain the most complete, near-global,
high-resolution database of the Earth's topography. Along with a
lot of information about the flight and its participants, there is a
primer page for the mapping technique entitled: Why Map the
World with Radar? It includes a sample image of the best
existing global map. A better image will be obtained from the
mission because radar is a better tool to use than regular optical
cameras. Radar can operate day or night and can penetrate cloud
cover. Through their access via the Internet, on this site, students
can watch astronauts whom they can virtually see, as the
astronauts are able to map the Earth whether they can see it or
not.

Louisiana Coastal Restoration

Richly detailing land loss problems and solutions, this Web site
includes extensive information. It would serve as an excellent
resource for a class study project or a student report on
conservation, habitats, and geography. The interactive maps
provide navigation through the material and graphical
presentations include stunning satellite images used as the basis
for highlighting local information. The Pontchartrain Basin Trends
map, along with many others, suggests lessons for cartography,
color, and nature's beauty.
The Web site is maintained by a taskforce made up of five
federal agencies (Department of Agriculture, Department of
Commerce, Department of Army, Department of Interior, and
Environmental Protection Agency) and the state of Louisiana.

History of TV Advertising

Advertising Age has put this timeline of television online in
decade segments beginning with the 1940s and concluding with
the 1990s. Students in school today, who are experiencing the
advent of the Internet, will probably see parallels to their new
medium in the development of television. There are many
memorable TV highlights, accompanied by contemporary images
unforgettable to those who saw them when they first appeared:
1947: "Howdy Doody," a children's series, premieres live on
NBC in December as a one-hour Saturday program. Symbolic
of the first generation nurtured on TV, the show remains on the
air until 1960.
1960: The first of four "great debates" between John F.
Kennedy and Richard Nixon is broadcast on Sept. 26 across the
country, breaking new ground in presidential campaigning.
1980: MTV: Music Television makes its debut in August.

One Thousand Years of People

The World Wide Web was a full media participant in the
celebration of the new millennium, and a result has been some
outstanding new online knowledge resources that were created
for the great event. The Wall Street Journal's Millennium One
Thousand Web collection is an excellent example. Its section
called "People" contains four articles prepared by WJS writers.
The insights and talents of these top flight journalists have report
on the people who lived during the thousand years ending on
December 31, 1999.
Sampling the 50 Richest timeline, it begins with Al-Masur
(938-1002) who had 6 million pieces of gold obtained through
sacking and plundering. Further down the centuries, merchant
banker Cosimo de Medici (1389-1464) is described as head of
Europe's richest and most powerful family. Beginning the bios of
the 20th century rich is Imperialist Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902),
noted for establishing the scholarships that bear his name.
Exploring the experience of the poor, another feature on the
page begins: "The poor may be better off today than the poor of
the past. But so many still lead lives of desperation."

THREE ELEMENTARY SITES

Texas Safari

Five interactive tours are conducted by five Texas A&M
University undergraduates. The graphics are great and the tours
include interesting stuff, like facts on forensic entomology where
bugs are used in detective work.

ONE SHOWCASE SECTION

Geography for Kids

For those for whom childhood interactive geography study was
limited to placing the shapes of states into a map board of the
USA, this showcase section from Homework Central will be a
whole new world. Geography is a terrific study subject online for
everyone, because of its maps and other visual tools. There are
now many Web pages designed to teach geography at an
elementary level, and even to very young children. The best of
these are collected here, by region, topic, practice games, and
tutorials.
