Internet safety is a concern of any parent and, increasingly, of educators
faced with integrating the internet into their curriculum. Internet safety
as discussed here applies to three different categories of safety: first,
keeping a child safe from inappropriate content on the Internet, including
pornography and chat rooms; second; keeping a child safe from misleading
advertising and/or scams; and third, keeping a child safe from physical
threats as a result of internet usage. Filtering software is one means of
attempting to ensure internet safety, but it has limitations. Acceptable
use policies (AUP) at schools are a reactive method of promoting internet
safety
for children/students. Another approach to safe and responsible use of the
Internet is to extend the concept of media literacy (ML) into this area. ML
involves extending the skills of decoding, understanding, analyzing,
producing and evaluating written products to various media. ML applied to
TV might focus on how programs are constructed, the techniques producers and
advertisers use, and on how what they do is intended to influence/manipulate
you. Ideally, such knowledge makes one an intelligent consumer of media.
This issue of L2L4ED highlights several web sites that offer ML alternatives
to internet safety.
A number of the sites addressed in this issue are applicable more to parents
than to teachers, but teachers and schools could easily bring them to the
attention of parents through school programs or school web sites. As more
and more schools educate students on the positive attributes of the
internet, they are also identifying a need to educate them about the
negative aspects as well. An increasing number of schools are also
recognizing a need or a desire to help educate parents as well about both
the positive and negative aspects of internet usage.
1. WebSmartkids. A parent's guide to building children's Media Literacy
skills for the Internet. It is a place where parents can learn how to raise
media literate kids
who can use the Internet safely and productively. This site provides you
with an overview
of media literacy, hands-on activities you can do with your kids to boost
media literacy
skills for the Internet, and resources to help you keep your kids web-smart.
WebSmart Kids is an educational initiative created to help you teach your
kids to evaluate
the information they find on the web in the same way you've taught them so
many things:
model the skill, give them practice, and support them as they learn.

offers an extensive Online Safety Guide; a Tools for Families section that
includes descriptions of software for filtering content, monitoring use,
and/or limiting time on the net; tips for noting and reporting online
trouble; and
an extensive listing of children's sites. This is an extremely valuable
