TeachersFirst Update - February 7, 2000
Don't look now, but the days are getting longer...
Valentine's Day is coming up next week, and so a nod of the quill to
Christopher Marlowe, whose birthday was February 6th, and who penned the
lines, "Come live with me and be my love..." If you teach English
literature, be sure to take a look at TeachersFirst's complete section
on Marlowe. In his day, he was more popular than Shakespeare. The
Marlowe unit is at: http://www.teachersfirst.com/lessons/marl-1.htm

For the rest of you who are looking for Valentine's Day resources,
consider a special art lesson that lets students use stencils to create
valentines. The lesson is unusually well written and illustrated. You
can find it among our art lessons; just scroll down to the letter "V."

TeachersFirst's weekly Brain Twister quiz is proving to be enormously
popular. Our thanks to the dozens of teachers who used the Twister with
their classes and sent in the results. The first winning entries appear
on this week's winners' page. If you'd like us to create an elementary
version of the twister (3rd-4th grade level?) let us know by sending an
e-mail to editor@teachersfirst.com. If you'd like to try this week's
Twister with your students, the URL is

Looking for an interesting history lesson to use as part of Black
History month? Take a look at TeachersFirst's Underground Railroad
introduction. It's a short, easily navigated introduction to the origins
and purpose of the underground railroad and the abolitionist movement in
the 19th century. Students can follow the brief narrative, explore the
links, and find lots of material for reports or presentations. The URL

Just getting started in the classroom? TeachersFirst has a long list of
resources to help beginning teachers get off on the right foot. These
include some tips from our own classroom teacher/editors. The new
teacher page is at http://www.teachersfirst.com/new-tch-f.htm

This week's features include several new features for mathematics
teachers, including some neat interactive demonstrations. There are also
new additions to our African American heritage section, as well as
several new lessons based on election 2000 themes. As always, the
features are at http://www.teachersfirst.com/feature-f.htm

That's all for now; have a great week, and remember to make a
difference.
