Fort McHenry

Get a view of the kind of study environs that are coming over the
Internet horizon in this sweeping panorama of the Fort McHenry
National Monument and its history. Appropriate for the birthplace
of the United States National Anthem, many of the topics have
audio accompaniment. The homepage features "Oh say can you
see . . ." with a painting of the fort over which came the "dawn's
early light." The Civil War section has mournful strains of "When
Johnny Comes Marching Home." For World War I and World
War II, Ragtime and Boogie Woogie are played, respectively.
This is a large, multimedia Web site with a fine presentation of the
history that took place at Fort McHenry, along with virtual visits
to the present site located near Baltimore.

Fish Map

Cast about among seven regions, or go deep into particular
fisheries, by clicking though this interactive United States map
from the US Wildlife Services. The map is a good teacher of
geography and provides students with regional information about
hatching and protecting fish. Every National Fish Hatchery is
represented on the map, each has an information page, and many
are hatching their own Web sites. The map could be used to study
the growth of the Internet, as the "under construction" signs on
many pages are replaced by site launchings. What is happening
here is the convergence of an umbrella Web site of a federal
government agency, with content about fish and habitats filling in
from the local level. The excellent effect is a place to study fish
that is structured from the top down, yet very rich with local
materials and access.

Mali Interactive

Once the farthest away place imaginable in the English-speaking
world, Timbuktu is a click or two away when you enter this
handsome and extensive Internet guidebook. There are illustrated
sections for history, geography, facts+figures, environment,
society and education. The pages can be explored directly or
through the steps of a virtual journey. Throughout, you see
pictures of the people of Mali and learn about their lives and
ideas. Of the great River Niger, which runs through the heart of
Mali, fish trader Bamako is quoted: "The river is very, very
important in the life of the [capital]city. It gives us fish to eat and
sell, water to drink, a place to wash and do laundry, and a means
of transport. We could not live without the river."

Japanese Currency Museum

Hosted by the Bank of Japan, this museum covers the nation's
currency in a museum, in an online history, and with special
features. The history provides a timeline, beginning two millennia
ago, and steps through the development of Japan as seen in its
money. Clicking through the interactive timeline provides detailed
history and images that are unique and beautiful. The presentation
runs the gamut from a good place to show young students the
concepts of coins, paper money, and development of currency
through time -- to a definitive resource for Japanese currency. The
Feature 1 FAQ offers an introduction to some of the basics and
links to other Web sites.

Soap Films Made Easy

Learn here that: A soap bubble is simply a very thin sheet of
water sandwiched between two layers of soap molecules -- and
then slide down this long page to see how a simple subject can
expand the mind. This page is full of the excitement of science,
and is an example of how the Internet allows students to receive
direct explanations from senior scientists and working labs. The
dynamics of falling film are explained in these words: "Think of the
film emerging as a skydiver jumping out of a plane. As she jumps
she quickly accelerates, and so does the film. As the film spreads
out, air drag across it's ever expanding surface becomes
important. The film quits accelerating, and may even slow down,
as is the case with the parachutist as she pulls open the chute.
Once the film reaches the parallel section of the channel, its speed
will be constant, as it is for the skydiver, who now glides down to
earth."
