THURSDAY, JUNE 8TH, 2000:
END OF SCHOOL YEAR ACTIVITIES.
TODAY: Paper Mache!

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
"It is often wonderful how putting down on paper a clear statement
of a case helps one to see, not perhaps the way out, but the way in."
- A. C. Benson

*~*~*TOPIC TALK!*~*~*

President Clinton announced on Saturday that he would give $128 million
in federal grants to train teachers on computers, saying that teachers
should use both computers and chalkboards with equal ease. Yet the Dept.
of Education cited that in fact less than one in five teachers feels
adequately
trained to use computers and technology in the classroom.
What do you think? Are teachers in your district receiving enough technology
training? Are they given the time, the opportunities, and the methodology
to your satisfaction? And how do teachers rate at your school: do they
feel comfortable around computers and use them easily? What kind of
training do you think teachers in your district would best benefit from?
Will Clinton's proposed federal grants help alleviate any perceived
problems?
Let us know your take! Write to:

to include your letter in a forthcoming issue.

*****PAPER MACHE!*****

GENERAL PAPIER MACHE INSTRUCTIONS:

http://www.tappi.com/paperu/artClass/papierMache.htm#start

The instructions here do not follow along a single project idea;
rather they can be used as general guidelines for all your projects.
Pay heed to their warning that this papier mache can:
a. get very messy!
b. take a few days to complete (due to the drying time)
--and then plan accordingly!

PAPER MACHE PENGUINS:

http://www.kinderart.com/little14.htm

Most young children are fascinated by penguins. If your class has learned
something about these animals and their habitats this year, then this
project is a great way to finish things off!

PAPIER MACHE FARM ANIMAL SCULPTURES:

http://www.csuchico.edu/educ/cguenter/FourArts/VA/VApmascu.html

The level suggested for this lesson is grade four, probably because
of the formal concepts introduced of color and texture. It could easily,
however, be used for grades two and three as well.

PAPER MACHE BRACELETS:

Okay, this might not be one for the guys; you can try telling them that
surfer dudes wear them--but if that doesn't work then have them go to
the animal site above instead! Certainly all the young ladies in your class
will love to make and decorate their own bracelets!

TURTLE EGGS AND WALNUT TURTLES:

http://octopus.gma.org/turtles/craft1.html

This paper mache and walnut art project is very cute, and would make
a great display in your classroom. Students will love taking them
home as well.

PAPIER MACHE BOWL:

These bowls are beautiful, a great project for upper elementary
to Middle School students, with a bit of learning text on the side.
If you can't readily find the wallpaper paste, you can make a simple
paste that works just as well, using only flour and water, and
mixing it to the right consistency.
