If you're having a special class/school picnic or celebration to
mark the end of the school year, then you'll want to try the ever-
popular pinata. Here in Southern California, a pinata is hung for almost
any children's event, and they always love it! Your older classes
could even design and make pinatas to share with the younger students.
Fill the finished pinata with candies and treats, and have fun!

WHAT ARE YOU DOING FOR THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR?
GREAT FUN!! FIELD DAY AT THE PARK!
"The 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades are going to have a fun Field Day at the nearby
park. We will have:
sack races
peanut races
old clothes relay
balloon popping relay
water race
and if we have time, a water balloon toss
We did it last year for the first time, and it was a lot of fun.
Lots of parents come to help out, too.
Rita Flynn"
A WONDERFUL TRAVEL ADVENTURE!
"The last day of school is a half day for my fifth graders. The room
is pretty well packed up and the only things left in the kids' desks are
their pencils, a ruler and crayons or markers. We usually spend a little
time talking about how we will spend the summer, and eventually the
conversation turns to places we would like to visit. ..But what if your
mind were the vehicle taking you there? If you could go absolutely any-
place you could imagine, where would you go for the perfect vacation?
I let the kids discuss the possibilities for a few more minutes, and then
give them a trifolded sheet of 9x12 manilla drawing paper to complete
as a travel brochure to this imaginary destination. I outline on the board
what must be included in the brochure: a picture on the front with a general
description of the place, a bulleted list of some of the activities, a
labeled
map of the of the area, a list of restaurants in keeping with the theme,
etc.
I also bring in travel brochures to suggest other items they might include.
When completed, we share with the class. Over the years we have been
enticed with trips to the future, to ancient Egypt and colonial America, to
historical events(like the Boston Tea Party), destinations suggested by
books,
amusement parks suggested by hobbies or patterned after sports figures....
The activity is very simple, requiring little preparation (especially if the
kids
have had some experience with writing brochures in the past), few materials
and is always enjoyed by the kids.

GRADUATING SELF-PORTRAITS:
"I am an elementary art teacher. My fifth grade classes just finished a
unit on portraits, concluding with the students drawing self-portraits.
We double-matted each potrait and hung them on display. What I hadn't
realized was that the timing was GREAT for this! The display also served
as a farewell to our 'seniors' ! "

:::YOUR CORNER:::
ANY IDEAS PLEASE?
"Dear Brenda,
I have used the plans for the '20 Kids -20 Kites - 20 Minutes' and they
worked very well.
(ref: http://www.aloha.net/~bigwind/20kidskites.html )
I used brightly colored Xerox paper for the body of the kites and the kids
really liked the hot colors. My only problem was in the taping of the
skewers. The regular cellophane tape just did not hold very well and they
kept coming loose. This was frustrating for the kids. If someone out there
discovers a better way to attach the skewers I would love to hear about it.
BTW, My first graders had a blast making and flying the kites!
Thanks,
Mrs. Swink, Gr. 1"

ROCKS AND MINERALS:
Who knows how to make rocks and minerals come alive for ninth graders?
Thanks.
