U.N. HUMAN DEVELOPMENT REPORT RANKS CANADA #1, AGAIN
For the sixth year in a row, the United Nations Human Development Report
1999 ranks Canada as the world's number one country in terms of health
care, life expectancy, education and income. Norway, the United States,
Japan, Belgium, Sweden, Australia, the Netherlands, Iceland, Britain, and
France round out the top ten. Look for the report online sometime on
Monday at:

DEATHS HIGHER AT BEGINNING OF MONTH
A study of over 31 million death certificates found that deaths are highest
at the beginning of the month and lowest toward the end of the month.
Researchers found that found the death rate from substance abuse, suicide,
accidents and homicide jumped about 14 percent during the first week of
each month, suggesting that the arrival of government checks might lead to
these statistics.

QUAKE HITS CENTRAL AMERICA
Felt in five countries, a powerful 6.1-6.6 Richter magnitude earthquake hit
Guatemala early Sunday morning. One person was reported killed and over 40
are injured, following the quake with an epicenter near Puerto Barrios,
about 175 miles northeast of Guatemala City.

MALAYSIA BANS AUSTIN POWERS
Malaysia's Censorship Board has banned the movie "Austin Powers: The Spy
Who Shagged Me" for its excessive sexual innuendo. The country also banned
the animated movie about Moses, "The Prince of Egypt," earlier this year.

TEN CITIES, CLEANER AIR
Ten U.S. cities were honored by the Foundation for Clean Air Progress as
the Top 10 Clean Air Success Stories. The ten cities (Rochester, N.Y.;
Buffalo, N.Y.; Milwaukee; San Diego; Boston; Sacramento; Detroit; Chicago;
Newark, N.J.; and Los Angeles) are the ones that have made the most
significant progress in cleaning up their air over the last ten years,
according to data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
