Houston, We Have a Solution! will explore several challenges through the
eyes of the scientists and engineers who help solve them. We’ll talk to
the real heroes of space exploration—the men and women who find solutions
before there is a problem—as well as visit with scientists who work with
the problems of the everyday. In the span of three 15-minute lessons,
we’ll meet:
>> NASA SCUBA divers who work in a house-sized pool, assisting astronauts
as they train for extra-vehicular activities (EVA).
>> Water quality specialists from the National Aquarium in Baltimore, one
of the most sophisticated and technologically advanced aquariums in
existence.
>> Innovative scientists who communicate with orangutans at the National
Zoological Park in Washington, DC.
>> One of the nation’s leading strength and conditioning coaches, who has
designed training programs for professional athletes and astronauts alike.
>> Staff at Gallaudet University, the only university in the world for
people who are deaf and hearing impaired.
While they are fascinating in their own right, these lessons also tie
directly into the Space Day 2000 Design Challenges, a nationwide
educational event featured on http://www.spaceday.com. Each lesson focuses
on
topics related to the three Design Challenges, providing real-world ideas
and inspiration to the students who watch them. Students will have the
opportunity to design the way real scientists and engineers do—by building
upon related examples of creativity and ingenuity.
Houston, We Have a Solution! will air Tuesday, February 29, 2000 at 1:00
PM EST. The three lessons will be broadcast in succession, for a total
air time of 45 minutes. Be sure to set up your recording equipment to
capture this FREE broadcast!
