Subject: [DUC] INFO/NYT: VA Linux is a Key Company in the Development and
Marketingof Linux

REGARDING A NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE WITH LINK AND EXCERPT BELOW:

Linux is a developing competitor to the Windows operating
system of Microsoft that has come to have a dominating market share in the
computer industry and especially the personal computer market. Major
companies in the computer field are however committing their organizations
to develop hardware that operates on Linux and its market is steadily
growing. VA Linux is positioning itself to take full advantage in the
market shift towards Linux that has begun to occur.

A View That Needs No Windows
By LAWRENCE M. FISHER

VA Linux is a standard-bearer for the Linux operating system and the
Open Source movement. Augustin and the other founders of the company, and
the movement, contend that by making the computer code underlying a
program freely available, and readily modifiable by anyone, a stronger
system with fewer crashes results, ending the domination of operating
systems owned by one company, especially Microsoft Windows.

A couple of dozen companies have jumped on the Linux bandwagon, based
on the premise that there is money to be made selling an operating system
that anyone can obtain for free. VA Linux is unusual in that it sells
complete computer systems that come loaded with Linux (but not Windows).

"We're designing from the ground up for Linux," he declared. "And what
we offer to our customers is not just a system. It's full service, a
single point of contact, service and support for building their entire
infrastructure."
