As part of Winnipegís Earth Day 2000 celebrations, the largest per capita
Earth Day event in Canada, Fort Whyte Centre is promoting awareness and
education on ìClean Energy Now!î by organizing an international student art
exchange between school children (age 8-13 years) in Winnipeg and abroad.
Participating students will create art depicting energy in their lives, and
exchange it with students from another country. Students will select
specific pieces of art work to send to Fort Whyte Centre which will be
compiled into the Energy Pathways 2000 posters and redistributed among
partner schools.
Project Background
Global energy use has increased nearly 70% since 1971 and is expected to
increase at more than 2% annually for the next 15 years. The developed
nations account for only 20% of the global population but currently consume
2/3 of the worldís energy. Newly industrializing nations are also
increasing their energy consumption at a rapid pace. In the least
developed world, people continue to struggle to meet their basic energy
requirements through fuelwood consumption resulting in deforestation.
Implications of current and projected energy use are sobering, and the need
for significant reduction of demand and implementation of clean
technologies is clear.
Burdened by global fossil fuel dependency, todayís youth face a global
environmental crisis. However, as tomorrowís leaders, they offer the best
opportunity to restore environmental integrity to the planet. Increasing
awareness of such pressing global issues as climate change and the need for
ìclean energy now,î and challenging youth to recognize both the risks and
opportunities implicit in their own energy consumption fosters the
development of a generation enabled to act locally within the global
context.
Goals
- Students will identify local energy use and related environmental issues.
- Students will gain an appreciation of international energy use and energy
use issues.
- Students will connect with other students in a different country,
providing opportunities for communication and collaboration.
- Earth Day participants at celebrations in partner school cities will gain
an appreciation of international energy and energy use issues.
Project Elements:
I. Project partnership team consisting of schools (student age 8-13 years)
in Winnipeg and its sister cities. (Setagaya, Japan; Rejkjavik, Iceland;
Minneapolis, USA; Lviv, Ukraine; Manila, Philippines; Taichung,China;
Kuopio, Finland; Beersheva, Isreal; Chengdu, China; Chinju, Korea, San
Nicol·s de los Garza, MÈxico, CÛdoba, Argentina ). International
partnerships will be sought using European Schoolnet, World Links for
Development, Web66 and Fort White Centre contacts.
II. International Student Art Exchange

detailing objectives. Students portray energy and energy use issues in
their lives as it relates to the Earth Day theme ìClean Energy Now!î
Students will create their art with culturally appropriate and
environmentally friendly mediums.
- Completed art packages are exchanged between predetermined schools.
After art is exchanged, students choose the three best pictures and send
them to Fort Whyte Centre where they will be exhibited at Earth Day, and
compiled into the Energy Pathways 2000 poster.
- Poster, and additional copies, are sent back to each school for display
and dissemination providing awareness raising and international energy
education to a all project participants and other youth in the various
locations.
- Local Winnipeg youth will be invited to create their own energy art at
Earth Day that will be immediately added to the international student art
exhibit. Students in partner schools and other local youth will be
