Target 9-11 years

New Millenium parties, birthdays, weddings, christenings, festivals etc.are
celebrated by people throughout the world. Have you ever calculated the
overall cost of having a celebration ? What are the positive and negative
things associated with celebrations ?

Mathematics

Full Project Description:
1)What are the positive and negative things associated with celebrations ?

2)Calculate the total financial expenditure of a party given by or attended
by your family recently. Include in your cost the approximate cost of
presents, new clothing worn to festivities, accomodation and transportation
costs.

3)Were there any other costs involved ? (Cleaning bills, medical bills
resulting from after celebration illness and/or injury)

4) How much should your family should spend on a birthday party for you ?

5)Are there alternative ways of celebrating ?

6) Each participating school sends other participants the overall cost of
one student's celebration. Please indicate type of celebration
and itemise all expenses.

7.Add up the total cost of all celebrations from each of the participating
schools.

8) Think of a worthwhile project that could have been funded by the total
cost of these celebrations and send your ideas to other participants.

Optional:

Send participants photographs /drawings of recent celebrations attended by
students.

Objectives:
To compare attitudes of different cultures towards celebrations.

To compare the financial outlay by different groups of people.
