Subject: HIT: SEC: Social Issues Websites

Here are the responses I've received to my query on Social Issues web
sites. Many thanks to all who provided me with suggestions.

##########
Sandra, You can check the links I have on my Social Studies Resources web
page http://www.bellmore-merrick.k12.ny.us/social.html , especially under
the Government, Economics & Criminology section.

##########
One that we refer to a lot is Public Agenda- http://www.publicagenda.org/
Nice
graphs and charts, etc.

##########
Sandra,
Try these two. And please post a hit.
http://www.multnomah.lib.or.us/lib/homework/sochc.html
http://vweb.sau.edu/bestinfo/
(hot Paper topics.)

##########
I've collected some sites with the intention of helping students find a wide
variety of opinion about controversial topics. They include newspaper
editorials
and commentary, opinion forums and BBs, etc. You'll find the links at:
http://www.sd6.bc.ca/gss/library/public_html/gssweb/opinions.htm

It's not quite what you want, but you might find it interesting.

##########
I have found this website to be most useful
<http://www.multnomah.lib.or.us/lib/homework/sochc.html>
also <cnn.com>
I would be very interested in receiving a copy of your list since every
student in our school must complete a paper on a Social Issue.

Try...

Here is one created by a biology teacher at a high school. Be sure to
look at the section on projects.

Huge bibliography of Social Issues - unsure of author, though. Good
amount of matter available. Might want to check it out.

I found one tonight that might be helpful. It's
called http://religioustolerance.org
Comes out of Canada and gives both sides of many
contraversial issues such as creationism vs. evolution
and abortion and many other topics.

Sandy,
Are you planning a hit for these websites? If not, will you please send me
a list. I too could use this information. If you do post a hit, please
let me know so that I do not miss it. If it is next week, I will miss it
since I am going to the Texas Library Convention in Houston. Keep me
posted. FYI I just purchased a web based program called LRS Verticomp.
It was $239.00 for a yr plus 4 free months. It seems to be a good solution
for Freshmen. Short articles and sometimes a list of other websites that
they can go to. The url is http://www.lrsverticomp.com their number is
360-321-2850.
