Okinawans live longer that anyone else on earth. Why? From May
25th to June 2nd, Classroom Connect's Quest team will try to answer this
question. Guided by an online audience of Japanese and American students,
the IslandQuest team will explore the Japanese islands of Yakushima and
Okinawa. They will study the islands' natural history, diet, oral history,
and modern society to reveal the recipe for a long and healthy life.
Interviewing primary sources, the IslandQuest team will meet some of
the oldest residents of Okinawa and Yakushima, the oldest living people on
the planet, to learn about their lives and theories as to why they are so
healthy. We'll discuss the concept of community involvement by
investigating the modern culture. We'll look at social interaction and how
it increases the Okinawan lifespan.
As on previous Quests, students will direct this expedition, gather
clues, and participate fully with the team. They will set our weekly
course, help solve ethical dilemmas, and investigate mysteries along with
way. Japan will come alive during IslandQuest as our online audience helps
us investigate the lessons Okinawa and the surrounding islands have to
offer.

adventure.
