*** clarification about net-happenings sub-lists ***

*** From Net-Happenings Moderator ***

May 2, 1995

Welcome to net-happenings!

This list is dedicated to announcing new sites, events, publications,
training, and miscelleaneous information happening on the Internet.

For your own general information, there are 25-40 messages per day
posted to the list.

If you do not want to receive this many messages per day, you may want
to consider some alternatives:

-------
DIGESTS
-------

Both net-happenings and net-sites are available in digest format.
Individual messages sent to the main list are grouped together and
sent as one message when one of the following criteria are met:

- The total number of lines in the digest queue exceeds
1500 lines.

- The total number of characters in the digest queue
exceeds 40K.

- The age of the oldest message in the digest queue is
over 1 day.

The digest will cut down on the total message traffic you will
receive from these two highly active lists. The digest names are

net-happenings-digest
net-sites-digest

If you subscribe to the digest, don't subscribe to the main
list. If you are already subscribed to the main list and you
want to subscribe to the digest, unsubscribe yourself to the
main list and then subscribe yourself to the digest. There
are instructions on how to subscribe and unsubscribe below so
read on.

IMAP

MIDnet now provides "IMAP" access to all contributions mailed to the
net-happenings mailing list. This means if you have a mail client that
is imap-compliant (i.e., pine), you may read the latest articles off
MIDnet's IMAP server. By offering this kind of access, you don't have to
subscribe to net-happenings yourself, just rely on MIDnet to provide you
the articles. The format for accessing an IMAP server is:

*{imap.mid.net/anonymous}pub/net/yy-mm-dd

where you replace yy with "94", mm with "11", "10", etc and dd with "01",
"11", etc.

For example, after you press "g" in pine (for the "go-to" command), you
would enter the above string like this:

*{imap.mid.net/anonymous}pub/net/94-11-21

NOTE: if you receive a message stating host not found, check with your
system admin to see if they have implemented imap on the system
you are using

If imap is implemented on your system, you will receive something like
the following:

1 Dec 12 Gleason Sackman SOFT> netbook7.zip interactive web browser
2 Dec 12 Gleason Sackman SOFT> geo-gw 1.0: Gateway to the Geopgraphy
3 Dec 12 Gleason Sackman NEWSLTR> LFA (Live from Antaractica)

You may now use Pine to read these as you would any other mail.

Please keep in mind that these are _READ_ only. You _cannot_ delete them
since they are at the MIDnet site.

2 -DIGESTS
----------

Both net-happenings and net-sites are available in digest format.
Individual messages sent to the main list are grouped together and
sent as one message when one of the following criteria are met:

- The total number of lines in the digest queue exceeds
1500 lines.

- The total number of characters in the digest queue
exceeds 40K.

- The age of the oldest message in the digest queue is
over 1 day.

The digest will cut down on the total message traffic you will
receive from these two highly active lists. The digest names are

net-happenings-digest
net-sites-digest

If you subscribe to the digest, don't subscribe to the main list.
If you are already subscribed to the main list and you want to
subscribe to the digest, unsubscribe yourself to the main list and
then subscribe yourself to the digest. There are instructions on how
to subscribe and unsubscribe below so read on.

The new digest format has been maintained since the switch to Majordomo.
Additional info on getting current and previous digests can be obtained by
sending the following message:

info net-happenings-digest

to:

majordomo@dsmail.internic.net

-----
To subscribe to net-happenings-digest:
(These instructions are the same for net-sites-digest. Just
substitute net-sites for net-happenings)

1 - send e-mail to:

majordomo@dsmail.internic.net

2 - leave the subject blank

3 - in the body of the message, type:

subscribe net-happenings-digest

4 - send the e-mail

-----
***** NOTE 1: *****
this subscription will be _in addition_ to your regular net-happenings
subscription. You will want to unsubscribe your regular subscription so
you don't receive both of them.

***** NOTE 2: *****
you _may_ receive postings from both your _regular_ and _digest_
subscrptions. This is because your request to unsubscribe came in after
postings had already been "mailed" out to the list. The postings to
your former non-digest account will eventually stop. **SEE NOTE 3: BELOW**

-----
To unsubscribe your regular net-happenings:

1 - send e-mail to:

majordomo@dsmail.internic.net

2 - leave the subject blank

3 - in the body of the message, type:

unsubscribe net-happenings

4 - send the e-mail

* ***** NOTE 3: *****
Due to the size of the subscription list, requests to subscribe
and unsubscribe to net-happenings cannot be processed immediately
upon reception. They will be queued with other subscribe/
unsubscribe requests until around 1AM EST/EDT each day. At
that time, the requests will be processed in the order in which
they arrived. A person attempting to subscribe or unsubscribe will
be notified that the request has been received and queued.

-------------
3 - Keywords:
-------------
The subject line of the messages sent to the net-happenings list and
its sublists contain descriptive keywords. These keywords allow you
to save postings by category, and, if you have the capability, to use
a "filter" on your reader, or to read, file or quickly delete the posting. .

'category keywords' are as follows:
