This series features scientists and researchers who use the latest
laboratory and field science to challenge prevailing ideas and explain
events that have captured popular imaginations and confounded
scientific theories. In the first episode, science writer David Keys
embarks on a scientific odyssey that ranges from Greenland to the
Antarctica and then to the Far East to discover the exact nature of the

Through a combination of storytelling, WWII footage and the actual
paintings, this documentary tells the tale of the men who risked their

In the second episode, an international team of archaeologists,
forensic anthropologists, entomologists, and botanists sets out on a
desolate coast of Greenland to investigate minute clues in a complex
chain of events that may have led to the demise of a Viking colony.

In the third episode, Addison Bain, a retired NASA scientist, sets out
on a personal quest of theorizing and experimentation to prove that the
Hindenburg's real flaw was only skin deep. In the fourth episode,
physical anthropologist examine whether cannabalism was what brought
the Anasazi utopian culture to a sudden and mysterious end. (CC,

This special opens a window on the many faces of the famous natural
landmark, capturing not only the pristine beauty that has inspired

"Murder Rooms: The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes" (part one of
two)

In this program, a serial killer, loose in 1870s Edinburgh, is pursued
by history's real Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Joseph Bell, who was assisted by

SILENCE BROKEN: KOREAN COMFORT WOMEN
Thursday, May 18, 2000 (10-11:00 pm)
Highlighted by dramatized storytelling, this documentary focuses on
Korean women who were forced to serve the Japanese imperial soldiers as
sex slaves and euphemistically referred to as "comfort women." (CC,

PBS' longest-running public affairs program features Washington's top

"Monsignor Renard" (part three of three)
Sunday, May 21, 2000 (9-10:30 pm)
Filmed at Saint Valery sur Somme on the Picardy coast of France, this
special features John Thaw as a Nazi-defying French priest in a
powerful World War II drama. In the final episode, Renard does what he
can to comfort the townspeople through the familiar rituals of the
church as Saint-Josse slowly falls apart. (CC, Stereo, DVS)
