* Authorities said yesterday that they do not expect to find
John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy,
and her sister, Lauren Bessette, alive.
- Kennedy, the son of assassinated U.S. President John F.
Kennedy, and the others were flying from New Jersey to
the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard Friday
night when their private plane disappeared.
- the search for the wreckage of the plane is scheduled
to resume this morning.

* The Justice Department reports that violent crime rates in the
U.S. fell 7% last year to the lowest level in 26 years.
- crimes against property fell 12% last year to the
lowest level since 1973.
* The Pentagon says two U.S. soldiers were killed in Kosovo
yesterday when their armoured personnel carrier overturned
during a patrol operation.
- three other U.S. soldiers were injured in the accident.
* Three-term U.S. Representative Michael Forbes (NY) switched
from the Republican to the Democratic Party this weekend,
narrowing the GOP majority in the House of Representatives.
- Forbes cited his view of a lack of room for moderates
in the GOP as the reason for the switch.
* Apollo astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, gathered Friday
to mark the 30th anniversary of the first moon landing.
- Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon
on July 20, 1969.
* A recent report from the U.S. General Accounting Office say
at least seven of the Health Care Financing Administration's
58 contractors are being actively investigated for fraud.
* Leaders of the National Association of Counties say the
organization's general membership is expected to approve a
resolution calling for the collection of sales taxes on
goods sold over the internet.

* CNN cites U.S. White House spokesman David Leavy as saying that
U.S. President Bill Clinton has assured Chinese President Jiang
Zemin that the U.S. is committed to a "one China" policy,
despite Taiwan's moves toward independence last week.
- Clinton spoke with Jiang by telephone yesterday.

as saying that he does not rule out using force against
Taiwan if the province pursues independence.
* Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak said yesterday that he
expects to determine within 15 months if Israel can achieve
a major breakthrough in Mid-East peace negotiations.
* A planned shipment of nuclear fuel from Britain to Japan was
postponed this morning at Barrow, England, due to safety
concerns brought about by protestors.
- seven people were arrested during protests at the port
of Barrow last night.
* Reports say leaders of Iran's pro-democracy student movement will
meet with Iranian security officials today to demand that those
responsible for a police-led assault on student protestors last
week be prosecuted.
* At least 135 residents of the Mexican state of Colima and 160
people from the neighboring state Jalisco of were evacuated
yesterday following the eruption of the Colima volcano.
* Israeli media reports say the U.S. has agreed to give Israel
$1.2 billion to help pay for the withdrawal of troops from
the West Bank.
* Reports say two Russian soldiers were killed, and five others
wounded, in attacks on two border posts in the breakaway region
of Chechnya last night.
* Israeli officials say a roadside bomb planted by Hizbollah
guerrillas killed a pro-Israeli South Lebanon Army soldier
this morning near Kfarhounah.
* U.N. Spokesman David Wimhurst said this morning that militias
opposed to independence for the Indonesian province of East
Timor have been using threats and intimidation to disrupt
registration for next month's independence referendum.
