September 19, 2003 | Volume 2, Number 19
General
This site illustrates the Alaska Volcano Observatory's (AVO) objective to monitor Alaska's volcanoes for the purpose of forecasting volcanic activity and alleviating hazards. AVO's seismometers and satellite imagery allow visitors to obtain current information on selected volcanoes. Because AVO is responsible for volcanic emergencies, people in Alaska can visit the Web site to determine their vulnerability. The site also features AVO's research in geological mapping, modeling of magnetic systems, and development of new instrumentation for predication and interpretation of volcanic unrest. Everyone can appreciate the images of past volcanic eruptions. [RME]
Scientists for Global Responsibility (SGR) have created a site depicting the belief that "science and technology should be used responsibly in a way that contributes to justice and peace in human society and to the long-term well-being of the wider environment". Scientists can download reports that the group, consisting of 600 scientists, has written such as Cleaner Technologies: A Positive Choice. Students can learn about how to make wise career choices that will be both rewarding and environmentally friendly. The site also contains abstracts of future and previous conferences including Franks Barnaby's abstract The Rick of Nuclear Terrorism. All scientists and students interested in promoting ethical science and technology will want to explore this site. [RME]
PhysLink.com "is a comprehensive physics and astronomy online education, research, and reference web site." The home page provides the latest news in physics and astronomy. Those looking for employment can visit the Physics Job Board. Students and educators will find the reference section valuable whether they need Nuclear and Particle Data or equations for physics and math. Anyone with questions related to physics and astronomy can ask the experts online. Once joining the free club, users can also participate in the Online Chat.
Published weekly by the Office of Public Affairs, this Web site features news from the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. In its September 12, 2003 issue, visitors can learn about the investigations into the Columbia tragedy. Users interested in past events can also view the numerous archives. Families will find safety tips to help them prepare for the unexpected. Researchers can learn about upcoming seminars and conferences. Visitors can also submit stories that they feel would be of interest to the Goddard community. [RME]
The Paleontology Society, an international non-profit organization founded in 1908, created this Web site devoted to the advancements in paleontology. The site allows paleontologists access to abstracts in a few journals including Paleobiology. Prospective students will discover grant opportunities. Media representatives with questions about the history of life on earth can find contacts for paleontologists. Scientists can also learn about the society's Distinguished Lecture Program, which features lectures in various locations in the United States. [RME]
This site illustrates the USGS's research in astrogeology, which is "the science devoted to studying the origin, composition, structure, and history of the planets and their moons." Geologists will find information about the technologies, programs, and projects including the Planetary Geologic Mapping Program and the Lunar Pyroclastic Volcanism project. The site also provides scientists with the latest news in planetary science and remote sensing. Educators and students can take advantage of the abundant information dealing with characteristics of each of the planets, as well as their satellites. GIS users can find data sets and tutorials. Amazing images of the earth and other planets in our solar system are abundant throughout the site. [RME]
