Title: MatEd module: Speed Rusting and Hot Hands
Url: http://www.materialseducation.org/
Developer: NSF Materials Science Resource Center MST - Monroe Hall 20000 68th Avenue West Lynnwood, WA 98036-5999
Student Level: High school and community college
Activities: Laboratory
Classification: General / Multi-Material (LCSH)
Topic: iron, reaction, heat, rusting, r eaction rate variations
Format: HTML
Description: This metals processing experiment demonstrates the heat released when iron is oxidized. Normal oxidation (rusting) provides the same heat but over a prolonged period of time. Here, the process is rapid and is quite noticeable. This is used commercially to produce hand warmers and related products. Variations in the method and constituents in the reaction demonstrate the influence of variations in processing on the p
roperties of the product.
MatEd Core Compentencies: 0B. Prepare tests and analyze data s to chemical
5A. Apply Safe and Environmentally appropriate method
handling fundamentals
5B. Demonstrate knowledge of chemistry
6B. Apply concepts of fluids, heat and thermal conduction
7A. Identify the general nature of metals 7.K Compare thermal, physical and other properties of materials
9A. Define and Describe constituents, properties and processing of steel
Instruction Time: 20- 30 mins
