[Cwisusers] Installation Blues - Login

Hello,

I am in the process of getting CWIS installed and happily running on a
Linux 8.0 box. After setting up the necessary pieces: Apache, PHP and
MySQL, I have run into a snag with the admin user not being recognized
by the interface. In other words, once the portal is up and running and
I try to login as my admin user name, I get a login error. I have
checked the APUsers table in the MySQL database and for some reason the
username did not get entered into the database at installation time. I
have reinstalled several times with similar results. I have also tried
updating the database table to put in the username I chose for the admin
account but that did not help. Since the password is stored
"encrypted/mangled", I cannot tell whether the password entry is
correct... catch-22-ish...

In the meantime, I am trying to set up a regular user but since the
system requires sendmail to be fully functional, this may take a while
to get working... (not sendmail per se but the SMTP server portion)

Two questions:

1. Has anyone run into similar administrator login issues? 
2. Any backdoors available to administer the system... The online docs
(as in the Help available on the portal site) is kinda sparse...
