[SPTUsers] Unicode in Controlled Name Field

Hi,

We're getting close to finishing our SPT setup that covers Print as 
well as online references but we've come upon a big stumbling block. 
We are trying to enter UTF-8 into Controlled Name Fields and the 
unicode text is getting munged up.

For Text and paragraph fields, the unicode is working great. But when 
we enter it into the Controlled name fields we get that typical 
doubling of the number of glyphs and they're all question marks and 
squares and gibberische.

Is there a way to patch this ourselves? I'm a java programmer and I'm 
feeling a little lost in all this php code. I've really enjoyed 
learning how you set up the database. But I can't understand what the 
application is doing. I'm very interested though. Is there any 
technical documentation that describes the design of the application? 
Upon first glance I see that it uses a lot of includes.
