[SPTUsers] InstallComplete.php

I am trying to install the Portal Toolkit and am having difficulties with
the file SPT--Install.php.  I am using RedHat Linux 7.1, MySQL 4.0.0-2,
PHP-4.0.4, and Apache-1.3.19-5.  I can get to the SPT--Install.php file
through apache and enter in the information but when I click on the Continue
button I go to the SPT--InstallComplete.php page.  This page reads:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function:mysql_connection() in
/var/www/html/SPT/SPT --installComplete.php on line 209

The other difficulty I have had is with MySQL.  I created the SPT database
but then I tried to change the default password of password.  I used the
following syntax:
mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
This line leads me to believe that root and password are the default
username and password.  Now that I entered the previous line I cannot
connect to MySQL.  I get an error when I type mysql at the prompt.  

    ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root at localhost' (Using password:
NO)

I don't know if my problems w/ MySQL are related or not.  Any help would be
great and Thank you in advance for the help.
