The Last Month of the Scout Report for Business & Economics
The Internet Scout Project is sad to announce that we will be discontinuing publication of the Scout Report for Business & Economics after the next issue (May 31) as we have been unable to secure funding to continue publishing our subject-specific reports. The last issue of the Scout Report for Social Sciences & Humanities will be May 29, and the last issue of the Scout Report for Science & Engineering will be June 20. We have, however, no immediate plans to cease publishing our flagship report, the Scout Report. Many thanks to our loyal readers.

2001 Urban Mobility Report [.pdf]
http://mobility.tamu.edu/
Released on Monday, this new report from the Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University in College Station reveals that the last time "rush hour" only lasted an hour, Richard Nixon was the President. Based on 1999 data from 68 urban areas, the study finds that the average American spends 36 hours per year stuck in traffic, up from 11 hours in 1982. Among other things, the report rates congestion in cities by several measures, and Los Angeles ranks last in every one. At the site, visitors will find one and two page summaries, report sections, mobility data from selected cities accessed via an interactive map, a discussion on mobility measures, and other information. "Apple to open 25 US retail outlets" -- Boston Globe
http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/136/business/Apple_to_open_25_US_retail_outlets+.shtml
On Tuesday, Apple Computer unveiled its plans to construct 25 retail stores across the US this year in an effort to increase its share of personal computer users, which currently stands at about five percent. The first two stores opened May 15 in McLean, Virginia (also home of the CIA) and in the Los Angeles area. Apple hopes that the stores will build brand awareness, demonstrate to consumers the range of accessories and software available for Mac, and serve as a corrective to the marginalization of Macs in many retail stores. While the announcement has been met with guarded praise by some analysts, others have expressed serious doubts, especially given the recent drop in PC sales and Gateway's decision to close 40 percent of its retail stores.

The homepage of Apple - Retail offers some information on the grand openings and upcoming events in the stores. CNET's special report includes articles, analysis, related stories, and some video clips. Coverage is also available from the Mac news sources MacCentral Online and Mac Observer, as well as online news stalwarts ZDNet and MSNBC. Additional stories may be found in the San Jose Mercury News and the Boston Globe.[MD]
