The Gallery of the Open Frontier is a digital image library of photos, paintings, and drawings that pertain to the history of the American West. This online resource, drawn initially from the primary collections of the National Archives, is being designed by the University of Nebraska Press to serve four essential functions: 1) Allow researchers to easily view portions of the holdings of the National Archives from anywhere in the US with an Internet connection; 2) Establish a testbed for developing similar digital image libraries from the nonprofit and public sector image archives; 3) Provide a service to the educational community by making thousands of images easily accessible worldwide for educational use and historical analysis; 4) Provide the raw materials for the creation of teacher- and scholar-created "tours," educational units, and teaching aids about the history of the American expansion into the West, both online and on CD-ROM.

Net Tools

The Scout Toolkit
The InterNIC and Net Scout Services announce the release of the Scout Toolkit, a new service designed to help new users identify the network tools most appropriate for their needs. The Scout Toolkit was built by collecting, organizing, and annotating a subset of the most effective network information tools available. The Toolkit is made available for researchers, educators, and others interested in using the Internet for access to quality resources.

The Toolkit is not meant to be a comprehensive listing of all network tools, rather a select collection of tools organized by function. Internet users can investigate searchable indexes, subject catalogs, and annotated resource indexes and decide which tool best fits their needs. Links to comprehensive listings of network tools are also provided for further investigation.

Each service included in the Toolkit is previewed with a brief description, allowing the user to determine its appropriateness before linking to the site. In addition to information about search tools, the Staying Current section offers a dozen effective ways to stay informed of new Internet resources. The Specialized Tools section takes a look at current and near future graphical, 3D, audio, and video services.
http://rs.internic.net/scout/toolkit

If you find the Scout Toolkit useful for yourself and your users, let us know at scout@cs.wisc.edu.

Based onfeedback and input from the community the Toolkit will be maintained and expanded as a permanent service of Net Scout Services.
