Only two weeks away on the first Saturday of May is #WildfirePrepDay2024. This day aims to encourage people and organizations to come together to raise awareness and reduce wildfire risk. If you live in a Wildfire Urban ... Interface (WUI), it's always a good idea to be #Firewise and prepare your property for the potential of wildfire. 🔽What you can do today 🔽 ✅Clean roof surfaces and gutters of pine needles, leaves, and branches regularly. ✅Remove portions of any tree extending within 10 feet of the flue opening of any stove or chimney. ✅Create a fuel break and maintain it around all structures. ✅ Ensure wood piles, fuel tanks and other burnable materials are 30 feet from structures. NIFC is the home base of the Great Basin Smokejumpers, one of nine smokejumper bases in the United States! As the busy season approaches, these extraordinarily strong and disciplined firefighters are preparing their gear, their ... bodies, and their minds for the work - which means brushing up on the practice of bailing out of a fixed-wing aircraft at 3,000 feet. From rookies performing their first jumps to veterans with many seasons under their belts, this is an exciting time of year for jumpers. #NationalFireNews: 18 new large fires were reported in the past week. Currently, three large uncontained wildfires are burning in Kansas, Virginia, and North Carolina. Wildland firefighters and support personnel contained 22 large ... fires this week. A fuels and fire behavior advisory remains in effect for Northwest Texas, western Oklahoma, southwest Kansas, southeastern Colorado and far eastern New Mexico. Should unwanted ignitions occur, wildland fire personnel should expect extreme to unprecedented fire growth and intensity in these areas due to high fuel loads and windy and dry atmospheric conditions. Year-to-date statistics show that 10,199 wildfires have burned 1,774,404 acres during this #FireYear2024. Welcome to the Nation's Logistical Support Center

Support Center

The nation’s federal wildland fire community is a large and complex organization across the Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs; and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service. These agencies manage wildland fire on nearly 700 million acres of federal public land, or one-fifth of the total land area in the United States.

NIFC is home to the national fire management programs of each federal fire agency, along with partners including the National Association of State Foresters, the U.S. Fire Administration, and the National Weather Service. A Department of Defense liaison was added as a permanent partner at NIFC in 2008. Working together, these partners provide leadership, policy oversight and coordination to manage the nation’s wildland fire programs.

In recent years, the role of the agencies at NIFC has grown to include all types of fire management, including hazardous fuels treatments, integrated fire and land-use planning, and more. Fire management under this larger umbrella is designed to achieve not only suppression goals, but to accomplish a broad spectrum of natural resource objectives, and do so in an efficient, cost-effective manner.
