Title: NAEP 1996 Science: Report Card for the Nation and the States
Description: This report presents the results of a national assessment of what the nation's 4th-, 8th-, and 12th-grade students know and can do in science. Results are also reported for 44 participating states and jurisdictions at the 8th grade level. Students were assessed on their knowledge of earth, physical, and life sciences, as well as for their conceptual understanding, ability to conduct scientific investigations, and practical reasoning skills. Each student was given multiple-choice and extended-response questions, and was asked to perform at least one hands-on activity.
