Major contributors to this $71.4 billion increase include personal consumption expenditures for services and inventory investment offset by an increase in imports and a decrease in exports. [MW]

This week's In the News looks at the recent megamerger between Exxon Corporation and Mobil Corporation. These ten resources provide news, financial data, and opinion on the largest corporate purchase to date as well as information on the oil industry in general. In a move deemed "the end of the age of OPEC" by Wall Street Journal reporter Bernard Wysocki, Exxon Chairman Lee R. Raymond formally bought Mobil Oil Company for $74.4 billion on December 1, 1998. Critics of the deal await antitrust scrutiny, although officials at Exxon Mobil, as the new company will be called, cite a "volatile world economy" and the need to "enhance global competition" as central to their decision.

The December 1, 1998 press release on the Exxon-Mobil merger is available from the Exxon news archive (1) with 1997 comparative figures on the two companies as well as media relations contacts. Further press releases, product information, details of corporate structure, and shareholder data is present at the Exxon (2) and Mobil (3) company homepages. The NY Times critiques the new alliance with discussions of Standard Oil history, antitrust speculation, and possible layoffs in the news compilation Big Oil: The Overview (4). Financial perspective on recent drops in oil prices, OPEC activity, and investor reaction are available from the CNNfn Special Report Eyes on Oil (5). Statistical information on the petroleum industry may be found at the US EIA Petroleum page with weekly, monthly, and annual price watches as well as market analysis (6). The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) circulates similar data at its homepage in addition to press releases (7). Links to other oil organizations, statistical distributors, libraries, journals, directories, maps, and newsgroups may be located at the Sci.Geo.Petroleum mailing list Internet Resources page (8). Academic opinion on natural resource economics, the international political economy, and antitrust policy is available from the searchable Communications for a Sustainable Future (CSF) discussion group archive (9) and the Antitrust Policy site (10) (described in the October 9, 1998 Scout Report for Business & Economics).
