Migration of Working Children in Nepal
http://www.ilo.org/public/english/standards/ipec/publ/nepal/
A project of the International Labor Organization and the Central Department of Population Studies at Tribhuvan University, this study was created to provide information on migrant child labor, as well as explore the "activities of the children by migration status." The study considered working children between the ages of five and seventeen, in both rural and urban areas. The major findings include that 29.4 percent of the working children have migrated because of economic reasons, living away from their homes for periods from six months to five years. Most migrant child laborers come from rural areas and work in other rural areas, and of all neighboring countries, India has absorbed the most Nepalese working children. The study is available online in its entirety in HTML format. [EM]

10) "Napster 101" -- Time Daily
http://www.time.com/time/daily/0,2960,43124,00.html
It was only a matter of time before musicians filed lawsuits against Napster for listing downloadable audio files of their records on Napster's cooperative database. Metal band Metallica was the first to announce a lawsuit on April 13, 2000, alleging the company "violated the law by committing continuing copyright infringements, unlawful use of digital audio interface device, and violations of the Racketeering Influenced & Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO)." Yale University, University of Southern California, and Indiana University were also named as defendants in the case, because they have allowed students to use campus resources to access Napster. MP3s have been controversial since the digital audio files first debuted, stretching the limits of copyright law. While Napster does not store any of the files at its site, it allows users to search Napster's database of MP3s which are kept on users's computers. (For more information on this controversy, see the January 27, 2000 Scout Report for Business and Economics).

This short article from Rolling Stone(1) covers basic reasons why Metallica has been able to sue. Wired News(2) reports on the Napster controversy from the perspective of the musicians. According to Lycos News (3), Dr. Dre has given Napster less than a week to delist his music from their directory. Erected by students at Indiana University, SAUC (4) offers full coverage of universities's responses to the Napster lawsuits. Read the press release issued by Metallica (5) on the Metallica official Website. The Bloomington Independent's two-part series on Napster (6) and (7) considers the future of Napster and free MP3s, from the standpoints of both musicians and music lovers. From the Cybercoverage section of the Christian Science Monitor(8), this column explores the guilty pleasures of using Napster. Salon technology columnist Scott Rosenberg (9) offers readers's views of the Napster debate and explores different possible ways in which lawsuits filed against Napster could affect the future of MP3s and digital delivery of music. Time Daily(10) has posted a beginner's guide to Napster. [EM]
