American Academy of Actuaries: Social Security News Briefing

The American Academy of Actuaries reports here on a news briefing held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 1, 2005, which addressed options for Social Security reform. At the briefing, Senior Pension Fellow Ron Gebhardtsbauer "talked about the financial and demographic challenges facing the system and reviewed the options for reform." Available from this website are some of the materials presented at the brief, including a fact sheet on social security, a table summarizing some of the options for reform, charts on Social Security's financial challenges, and some questions for reformers which draw on the analytical tools actuaries use to evaluate the impact of various reform proposals. More information on Gebhardtsbauer and a copy of a letter sent to the Social Security trustees regarding "infinite time period" estimates are also posted.
