From the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikispecies is an exciting new project intended to be an extensive, open directory of species covering plantae, animalia, bacteria, fungi, and more. This project is aimed at a scientific audience, and similar to other Wikimedia projects, Wikispecies is a collaborative venture that will evolve through the input and needs of its users. Therefore, Wikispecies is putting out the word to naturalists, scientists, and other taxonomists to help develop this centralized base for taxonomic information. The current template for Wikispecies pages includes: Taxonavigation, Morphology, Genetics, Vernacular Names, Distribution, Reference, Physiology, and more. Wikispecies offers an online forum for discussion about the project; a list of areas that are already covered, and areas that need attention; a page listing recent changes; and background information about the project.
