The Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO) at the National Archives and Record Administration (NARA) oversees the security classification programs in both Government and industry, and reports to the President each year on their status. As in previous years the Federation of American Scientists' (FAS) (last mentioned in the
February 19, 1999 Scout Report) Project on Government Secrecy has placed the full text of the report online. The report offers a summary of 1998 classification and declassification actions. For instance, there were over 7.29 million classification actions, (of which the CIA was responsible for 40 percent), and over 193 million pages declassified, including 20,000 on appeal. Other sections of the report discuss the Department of the Army's declassification program, the national Industrial Security Program, the cost of classification, as well as offering more detailed overviews of last year's classification and declassification actions.
