When Kansas became the 34th state on January 29th, 1861 it was this document, the Wyandotte Constitution, that was implemented as its charter. The document was not without controversy, as proslavery and antislavery movements sparred over provisions in the text. In fact, the Wyandotte Constitution was the fourth constitution written during what became known as the Bleeding Kansas era, a period noted for its fiery political feuds.
