A collaboration between The Library of Congress (LoC) and WGBH in Boston, the American Archive of Public Broadcasting (AAPB) is a project to preserve the most significant public television and radio programs of the past 60 years. In August 2013, the LoC and WGBH received a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and began digitizing approximately 40,000 hours of programs selected by over 100 local public broadcasting stations throughout the U.S. In this initial phase, 7,000 historic public radio and television programs are available for streaming at the AAPB website. Data records for another 2.5 million items can also be searched at the site, although, in this early phase, cataloging is not complete so data is a bit minimal. For example, a simple search on "Wisconsin" retrieves 407 records for digitized material, including 137 episodes of the Wisconsin Public Television program, Wisconsin Week, that are identified by episode number only - in order to discover dates and topics it is necessary to launch the video. It's also possible to refine by date, Media Type (moving image or sound), or Organization, as well as topic and genre, although, since cataloging is not complete, topic choices are limited at the moment.
