On May 27, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the fifth edition of The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which are designed to provide scientifically grounded, but easy-to-understand, suggestions for diets that promote good health. The newest edition has been redesigned to be more consumer-friendly, and also contains safe food handling guidelines for the first time as well as a stronger emphasis on physical activity, not just for weight management, but as a key to healthy living in general. Although the Guidelines numbers 40 pages, it contains numerous bullet point summaries and text boxes, making it easily accessible to readers of all ages. It can be downloaded in .pdf format from the USDA site.
