This Website serves as a launch pad for the UNICEF report
Domestic Violence Against Women and Girls released to coincide with the UN's special session on the progress of women's rights worldwide (see the
June 9, 2000 Scout Report for a link to the main document of this session). According to the
Domestic Violence report, "up to half of all women and girls in some countries have experienced physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner or family member." Even more disturbingly, "more than 60 million females are simply missing from population statistics -- killed by their own families deliberately or through neglect, simply because of their gender." Nonetheless, the report does not see the problem as unsolvable. Recommendations are offered concerning education and awareness-raising efforts as well as training law enforcement and judiciary officers to be more sensitized to the issue.
