Labor Arts

Jointly sponsored by the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation, Bread and Roses, and the Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives, Labor Arts features a wonderful collection of art devoted to labor issues and particularly the trade union movement. The site opens with a splash page that calls into question definitions of art, suggesting that "we eliminate the word 'art' and replace it with 'work.'" And true to that intention, Labor Arts showcases a range of materials from photographs and paintings to pamphlets, pins, banners, and assorted ephemera. The site is divided into several sections, with Collections holding the bulk of the material. Users can browse via categories such as Parades and Demonstrations or Buttons, Badges, and Ribbons or search with a large number of limiting parameters, such as state, occupation/industry, ethnicity, item type, and so on. The Exhibits section currently features three exhibits -- a Labor Arts Sampler, which displays the type of material the site hopes to collect; Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives, representations of the "culture of solidarity" in 20th-century New York City; and Images of Labor, works from contemporary artists showing the relationship of working people to American History. The collection at Labor Arts is small, but the site is new and still soliciting material. In the future, visitors can look forward to a moderated forum, which is currently under construction. A select list of resources rounds out the site.
