Children's Book Art: Techniques and Media

Aspiring children's book authors and artists will not want to miss this digital resource presented by the Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota Archives and Special Collections. The Kerlan Collection is "one of the leading repositories of rare books, process art, and manuscripts of children's literature." Curators designed this resource on the art and craft of making children's books for teachers, librarians, creative writing and art students, and curious readers. Each page showcases a particular technique or medium, such as collage or scratchboard, along with examples from artists who use it and a discussion of their creative process. The pages can be navigated using the links on the right sidebar or the right and left arrows at the bottom of each page. Most topical pages also include a plethora of external links to further learning resources, such as interviews with artists and videos demonstrating each technique. The Biographies section includes brief bios for dozens of featured artists and links to more of their work. Readers may find the Glossary to be a useful reference for unfamiliar terms and techniques like "impasto" and "intaglio."
