------------------ In The News ----------------

TAIWAN VS. CHINA
Last week, Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui announced their country's
abandonment of the "One China" policy that has kept China at bay, satisfied
that Taiwan is part of a unified China. This about-shift from Taiwan
outraged China, leading them to announce their ability to create a neutron
bomb and intention to use military force, should Taiwan declare
independence. Since then, China has cooled off a bit but tensions still
run high, and the threat of force remains. U.S. President Clinton spoke
with Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Sunday to reiterate that the U.S. is
still in favor of the "One China" policy.

NAACP CALLS FOR SOUTH CAROLINA TOURISM BOYCOTT
The National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)
drafted a resolution at their annual meeting last week to call on African
Americans and others to boycott traveling in South Carolina, until the
state capitol stops flying the Confederate flag. Though state business
leaders and even the city of Columbia (the state capital) have attempted to
force the state to remove the flag, the symbol of the breakaway Confederate
States of America during the Civil War. The state of South Carolina
created a law in 1995 that prevents anyone but the legislature from
removing the flag.

CENSUS BUREAU ESTIMATES 6 BILLIONTH PERSON
The U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the planet's six billionth person was
born sometime last weekend. Their PopClock of current estimated world
population is online at
http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html

SERBIA AND MONTENEGRO MAY SPLIT
According to a Serbian government minister, the two halves of the country
known as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia might divide into two
independent countries if they can't agree soon. It's Montenegro's hope
that Serbia will loosen control but it's unlikely that President Slobodan
Milosevic will relent. The talks between the two republics began last week
in Belgrade.
