Introduction
************
This is the last issue of the millennium! (okay, not technically) I
thought this would be a good reason to present lessons and resources
related to time, history, and timelines. Happy New Year!!!
A Day in the Life of Children: Then and Now
*******************************************
Grades 3-5
http://www.uen.org/Centennial/20Children.html
Although some of the resources mentioned in this lesson are
Utah-centered (it was written by the Utah Education Network), this is
an excellent way to introduce the concept of life "then and now" to
your students.
Timeline Lesson
***************
Grades 5-8
http://www.col-ed.org/cur/sst/sst151.txt
Students will create a timeline of their own lives.
Sequencing of Events Lesson
***************************
Grades 5-12
http://www.col-ed.org/cur/sst/sst138.txt
Students create a timeline with symbols by putting important events
into their correct sequence.
Family Timeline
***************
Grades K-2
http://www.eduplace.com/rdg/gen_act/growing/family.html
Young students will understand the concept of time by interviewing
family members about their lives. Includes an assessment rubric.
Recording a Moment in Time
**************************
Grades 3-5
http://www.eduplace.com/ss/act/recmom.html
Students design an accordion book of historic events. Includes an
assessment rubric.
A Celebration Timeline
**********************
Grades 2-4
http://www.eduplace.com/ss/act/celtime.html
Students will identify national holidays and create a timeline of
them. Includes an assessment rubric.
The Physics Classroom: Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity
**************************************************************
Grades 11-12

Students can explore time from a different angle with this interactive
web site.
Timeline Web Sites
******************
Here are a few pointers to lots of timelines on the web:
Geological Time Machine (4.5 billion years ago to the present) -
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/help/timeform.html
HyperHistory (3000 years of world history with a combination of
colorful graphics, lifelines, timelines, and maps.)-

What's Going On at Youthline USA
********************************
Youthline USA is the only newspaper written specifically for children
grades 3-8. The full color newspaper is delivered weekly. The articles
in Youthline USA contain national, world, and local news; features
about
health issues, animals, and the stock market; a sports section; a fun
section with comics, crosswords, and games; and more. Kids who write
and
send in their own articles--editorials, features, interviews--have the
opportunity to be published and earn special reporter badges. To help
teachers use the newspaper in the classroom, we include a standards
based lesson plan each week.
For a free sample issue of Youthline USA, send an e-mail request to
office@youthline-usa.com or to me at tsarah@lessonstop.org. Don't
forget
to include your name and mailing address. (PRIVACY STATEMENT: Lesson
Stop and Youthline-USA do not re-distribute or sell e-mail addresses,
names, mailing addresses, or other personal information to others.)
