The Central Bank Survey of Foreign Exchange and Derivatives Market Activity 1998 is a triennial statistical publication by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) (reviewed in the March 7, 1997 Scout Report). The survey reports on foreign exchange and OTC derivative activities in 43 countries, and an 83-page statistical annex provides spot, outright forward, foreign exchange swap, and total turnover figures by country for the month of April 1998. These data from the US Department of Commerce Census Bureau constitute the first few in a series of several hundred reports on individual industries in the manufacturing sector from the 1997 Economic Census. According to the 1997 Economic Census Manufacturing, Industry Series on Tortilla Manufacturing, over half of all US tortilla manufacturers are located in Texas and California. The 1997 Economic Census series on the Commercial Laundry, Drycleaning, and Pressing Machine Manufacturing does not include state comparisons but reports on total capital expenditures in Illinois as well as the US as a whole. Highlights of Women's Earnings in 1998 presents earnings data from the Current Population Survey (CPS) -- a national monthly survey of approximately 50,000 households conducted by the Bureau of the Census for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. According to this report, the female-to-male earnings ratio for 1998 is 76 percent, up 13 percent from 1979 figures, and white women's earnings were 17 percent higher than black women's, and 38.9 percent higher than those for Hispanic women at $468, $400, and $337 respectively. The EIA attributes a more competitive industry and increases in pipeline capacity as major factors affecting increased natural gas demand in Natural Gas 1998: Issues and Trends. According to this recently released report, Natural gas demand has increased in the United States by fourteen percent since 1990 and electric utility consumption of natural gas rose about seventeen percent from 1990 to 1998. This week's In the News looks at Europe's battered single currency, the euro. These seven resources provide background information, analysis, and breaking news. The slumping euro has just reached its lowest value since its launch in January, raising questions about its long-term viability as an alternative to the US dollar. Despite the decline, the European Central Bank (ECB) has continued to express its confidence in the Euro and recently decided to leave interest rates unchanged. The news is not all bad, however, as flagging eurozone exporters, especially in Germany, are taking advantage of the currency weakness, which makes their products inexpensive and more attractive to world markets. However, UK exporters already challenged by a very strong Pound will suffer further with a continuing euro slump. The recent fall, which is a reflection of divergent economic performance within the EU, also throws some doubt on Britain's adoption of the euro, which many assumed would occur after the next general election in 2002.
The CNNfn special report analyzes the euro's recent troubles and offers a number of archived articles on several related issues. BBC News gives a helpful overview of the euro from a British perspective. The site contains numerous articles, audio and video reports, and breaking news. The FT Euro site features news, market reports, commentary, and a guide to the monetary union. The European Central Bank site offers numerous documents and press releases related to EU monetary policy. The Association for the Monetary Union of Europe (AMUE), an organization of industrialists formed in 1987 to advocate monetary union, does not currently feature resources on the present situation, but it does contain an archive of the association's monthly newsletter (through April 1999), which examines important issues regarding the euro. Finally, users desiring more information on the euro will want to visit Euroscanner, a search engine dedicated to euro-related sites. [MD]
