This week's In the News follows economic conditions in the former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan. The above seven resources provide news, government links, and background information on Kazakhstan and its currency. Following a Kazahk National Bank announcement ending government limitations on currency exchange, the tenge fell in value from 88.30 tenge to the dollar on April 2, 1999 to 150.00 tenge to the dollar on April 6, 1999. The decision allows Kazakhstan's currency to float freely on international exchange markets and has resulted in some criticism from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). According to the IMF's representative Paul Ross, the decision should stimulate economic growth in this once-industrial economy, but it may come at some social cost. Currently, Kazahk citizens may exchange their bank deposits at pre-fall rates to the dollar providing they do not withdraw their savings for nine months, and as the BBC reports, many shop keepers in the commercial capital of Almaty have already doubled their prices.
BBC News provides the most detailed information on this little-reported event in the article Kazakhstan's Currency Tumbles (1), and additional news with IMF details is available from CNNfn (2). Search the World: Kazakhstan from the WashingtonPost.com International edition (3) is a search page that provides readers with links to current updates on Kazakhstan as well as weather, economic data, and background information from US government sources. The latest news from Kazakhstan is also available from Radio Free Europe's Kazakh Service with daily RealAudio broadcasts. The official Republic of Kazakhstan homepage (5) provides culture, history, and government overviews as well as Kazkh economic development information. Lonely Planet's guide to Kazahk land and culture includes recommending reading and travel information in addition to maps, a historical discussion, and "facts at a glance." Readings, maps, and factbooks are also available from the extensive Kazakhstan Resource Page provided by the Central Eurasia Project; the sited also offers additional news media links addressing Eurasia in general.
