Version 4.1.1
Released May 18, 2018

Requirements

CWIS 4.1.1 requires a web server with PHP 5.4.0 and MySQL 5.0 or later. PHP must be installed with MySQL and GD support.

CWIS is currently being developed with Apache 2.2.15, PHP 7.0.19, and MySQL 5.5.50 on CentOS Linux and OS X. It should work with earlier version of Apache, but these specific versions (or later versions) of Apache, PHP, and MySQL are recommended.

Installation

Before beginning installation of CWIS, you should have these pieces of information:

  • the directory (on the web server) where the software is to be installed,
  • the URL (web address) that will be used to reach this directory,
  • the host name of the system running your MySQL database server (often the same as your web server),
  • the user name and password for logging into that MySQL server, and
  • the name of the database on that MySQL server to use when storing CWIS data.

Once you have the above information and have downloaded the CWIS distribution file (CWIS-4.1.1.zip), unpack that file, upload the unpacked files and directories to your web server, and make sure that the directory structure inside the zip file is preserved and that the directory you uploaded to and the following subdirectories under it are writable by the web server:

include
tmp
local/logs
local/data

After you have the files uploaded and directories writable, begin the install by using your web browser to go to the URL:

http://mysite.com/installcwis.php

where http://mysite.com is the base address of the new CWIS site on your web server. This should bring up a web page titled CWIS Installation. You'll then enter the information you gathered above into the web page that comes up and click on the "Begin Installation" button.

If everything checks out, the installation should take less than 30 seconds, after which a link to your new CWIS site will be displayed, and you can go to the new site and log in with the user name and password you specified on the installation page.

Upgrading

CWIS 4.1.1 can be used to upgrade sites running CWIS or SPT 1.4.0 or later. If you are running an earlier version of CWIS or SPT you'll need to first upgrade to 1.4.0 (available below) and then to 4.1.1.

When upgrading a live site, please first back up your CWIS directory and database if at all possible. Significant effort is made to test each version before it is released, but web server environments vary widely and it's good to have a backup copy in case of difficulty.

To upgrade, download the CWIS distribution file (CWIS-4.1.1.zip), unpack that file, and upload the unpacked files and directories to the CWIS directory on your web server, overwriting the existing files from the previous CWIS version.

After you have the files uploaded, run the upgrade by using your web browser to go to the URL:

http://mysite.com/installcwis.php

where http://mysite.com is the base address of the existing CWIS site on your web server. This should bring up a web page titled CWIS Installation and begin the upgrade process

If everything checks out, the upgrade should take less than 30 seconds, after which a link to your new CWIS site will be displayed, and you can go to the new site and log in.

Vagrant

CWIS is also available as a vagrant "box". The current Vagrant box can be downloaded by running:

vagrant box add --name CWIS_411 https://scout.wisc.edu/sites/default/files/CWIS_Vagrant-4.1.1.box

Once this is done, CWIS boxes may be created as follows:

mkdir cwis
cd cwis
vagrant init CWIS_411
vagrant up

Once the last command complets, a CWIS installation will be available at http://localhost:8080/

Checksums

If you want to make sure that the file downloaded correctly, the MD5 checksum values for the files (obtainable on OS X systems with the md5 command, and on most Linux systems with the md5sum command) are as follows:

Version 4.1.1 Checksum Value

CWIS-4.1.1.zip     e6f0acff49cd435a5b5157719e351163

If you're not sure how to use the md5 or md5sum command, please consult your system administrator or local OS X or Linux guru.

(CWIS version numbering jumped from 1.1.1 to 1.3.0 to sychronize it with SPT version numbers.)

Upgrading to 1.4.0

If you are running a version of CWIS or SPT earlier than 1.4.0, you'll need to first upgrade to 1.4.0 and then to the latest version of CWIS. These instructions are for upgrading a pre-1.4.0 installation to 1.4.0.

Please note that upgrading to 1.4.0 requires a shell (command line) login to your web server (as did installing pre-1.4.0 versions).

Once you have downloaded the two CWIS distribution files (cwisinstall-1.4.0 and cwis-1.4.0.tgz, available above), place those files in a directory on your web server and begin the installation with the command:

./cwisinstall-1.4.0

(Note: After downloading the distribution files you may need to make the install script executable with the command:

chmod a+x cwisinstall*

If you're not sure what this command means, try the preceding command to start the installation and consult your system administrator if you get an error message like "Permission denied.")

The install script will print out various progress messages, and then direct you to a web page where you can complete the installation.
